Global Health Peru’s coursework provides a strong foundation for understanding the complexities of global health and promotes a rich interchange of ideas through the participation of different disciplines around the world. The following rotations and courses are being offered in our 2016 program.

  

Global Health Research Experience

Prerequisites: All levels of Spanish are welcome.

Date: Available all year (Two-month advanced notice is required, rotation dates and duration are flexible)

Cost: Base cost of $500 / month (Does not include housing or living expenses; varies, depending on project duration and required resources.)

Minimum number of students: 1

 

This immersive rotation provides students with academic understanding and hands-on, project-based experience with scientific research. The Global Health Research Experience includes mentoring under a Peruvian researcher at UPCH’s School of Public Health and Administration. Students will participate in existing research projects in UPCH, which includes ones aiming to increase poor, pregnant women’s access to health systems, improving mechanisms of maternal and child health education through text messages, and reducing child morbidity  and complications during pregnancy through the introduction of syphilis rapid testing. Global Health, Public Health, and Medical Spanish Course

Prerequisites: All levels of Spanish are welcome.

Dates: May 22 to July 2, 2016 

Cost: $3300 (only course, without excursions), $6500 (with excursions, apply through ISA)

Minimum number of students: 6

Application Deadline: March 31, 2016

 

This course is directed at university students and professionals who seek an intensive academic and hands-on experience looking at public health and community health in Peru. Students will participate in multidisciplinary coursework, field visits, a research project from start to finish, and an intervention to improve health in an indigenous community. In addition, Medical Spanish classes will be provided in order for students to communicate in basic terms during site visits and field work, as well as conduct a basic medical interview.

After completing the course, students will be able to describe Peru’s health system, evaluate and analyze problems in a vulnerable community using various tools, and collaborate in multidisciplinary and multinational teams to develop a research project and intervention.

Medical Spanish Course

 

Prerequisite: All levels of Spanish are welcome

Date: May 24 to June 3, 2016 (Monday to Friday, also can open rotation with a minimum of 6 students)

Cost: $400 (Does not include living expenses)

 

The Medical Spanish Rotation combines didactice learning with small group conversation and practice to prepare students to perform a basic medical interview on a Spanish-speaking patient, including basic Spanish terms related to anatomy, symptoms, and public health.
